So You Want To Work Online From Home: Skills Are Key To Success

In a recent post, Best Reason To Work Online From Home: There Is No Place Like I extolled the creature comforts, as well as the good-economic-sense, of trading in a traditional job, or a brick and mortar business, for the lifestyle, freedom, and income that is possible when one learns how to use the Internet to make a living online–from home. I pointed out that this is an option that didn’t even exist a few short years ago.

“So, is there a catch?,” you ask. Hmmm. Well, not so much a catch as the matter of taking all of this seriously (even while your heart is thumping with excitement!)  and going about your search for the right opportunity in a smart, professional, and well-informed way. I can’t emphasize the importance of that enough.

Here is some straight talk, gleaned from studying what sets those who are highly successful in starting and growing lucrative home-based online businesses apart from  those who claim to do the same but struggle with one “biz op” after another, and never make it.

Those who have primarily used a home computer and the Internet
for gaming, recreation, and entertainment purposes, may find that they have a harder time shifting to the idea of “work” when they try to sit down to work online from home. Also, individuals who are attracted–like moths to a flame– to offers and opportunities that are promoted as “no brainers,” learn the hard way that that is pretty accurate.

For 999 out of 1000 people, “no brainer” also means “no money”; at least nothing you could live or retire on. So beware. If the primary features and benefits offered are those that would have you believe that you don’t need to know how to do anything except push an easy button, you will be disappointed. No skill, no smarts, no money.

You can no more expect to get rich as an “unskilled worker” online than you can in the offline world. Skills matter. Knowledge matters. There are now people making their fortunes online; in fact, in record numbers. But what they all have in common, is that they have developed and honed the skills necessary to work smart, and they have surrounded themselves with other leaders so that they have–and give–great support. Their fortunes are a result of well-developed skills, consistent effort, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a burning desire to succeed.

Almost anyone who is fully prepared to treat a new home-based Internet business as a real business, and who applies the same mindset, work habits, and desire to succeed in learning how to work online as they would to any other job or task they really cared about, has an excellent chance of making it–big.  Making money online from home is not child’s play (nor grown ups play!); it is a new way to work; a new way to make a living in an Internet-driven economy. Those who truly succeed work at it; they bring integrity to all aspects of their business, and they step up as leaders to show others the way.

Lest this sound a bit daunting, a light note is that many new home-based Internet entrepreneurs report that the work–as well as the learning–is actually a lot of fun!

A final bit of good news is that there is a lot of excellent help available online and in professional online communities of entrepreneurs, to support and educate even the greenest Internet newbies. There are also a growing number of Internet business coaches available for hire–enough to go around, and enough for you to find one that is a great fit for you, your business and how you like to work.

So just be sure, as you come across all kinds of “offers” that you don’t just fall for the ones that sound “easiest;” rather,  choose one that will teach you new skills–step-by-step; help you develop your online leadership; and provide you with all the support you need to work “smart” as well as comfortably from your home.

If you aim high enough,
your business will do the same.
